Wash and soak chana dal for 2 hours. After 2 hrs, drain the water and place in a colander/ strainer for few minutes to drain away all the remaining water.
Clean banana flower and keep it ready. (Follow the instructions on this page on how to clean banana flower) In a pan add oil and saute banana flower for a few minutes in medium flame till it changes colour.(This step is optional. You can even use fresh cleaned banana flower for this recipe. If you need to store banana flower for few more days than usual, then follow this step and store in refrigerator. Use the stored one to prepare vada when needed.) Grind 1 tsp fennel seeds, 2 garlic, 1"ginger, 2 green chilli in a mixie.
To it add chana dal, banana flower, curry leaves, coriander leaves, salt, hing and turmeric powder.
Grind it coarsely without adding any water. 2- 3 long pulse will do.
Add 1 chopped onion, curry leaves.
Mix it and vada batter is ready.
Take a small lemon sized dough and roll into ball shape.
Press it in between your palms and slightly flatten it.
Prepare the balls and heat oil.
When oil is hot enough, drop flattened doughs in it.
Cook it in a medium flame to ensure the middle cavity is cooked too. Flip it over and allow it to cook the other side
When its cooked, transfer it to a plate.
Yummy vada is ready. Enjoy as tea time snack..
