Banana Flower Tamarind Curry

Almost every part of the banana tree can be consumed in some way or other and has innumerable nutritive and healing properties.
Banana Flower is used in traditional Ayurveda since times immemorial due to its ample health quotient. It is rich in Iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, Vit A,C,E, fiber etc. Since it is rich in Iron, it helps in treating anaemia. Rich in magnesium to reduce anxiety and hence serve as anti-depressants. Controls diabetes, prevents constipation, relieves stress and so on. Banana Flower is very healthy to everyone, especially women, as it keeps the uterus healthy, reduces menstrual pain and disorders and helps improve lactation for lactating mothers. It has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
Banana Plant can be easily grown in your backyard. Try to cultivate it and consume its fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. It in turn keeps your body healthy and happy, free from all diseases.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 Banana Flower (small)
  • 10 nos Small Onion
  • 8 clove Garlic
  • Gooseberry sized Tamarind
  • tbsp All purpose Chilli Powder (Kuzhambu milagai powder)
  • ¼ tsp Turmeric Powder
  • ½ tsp Mustard
  • ½ tsp Fenugreek
  • Curry Leaves

How to clean Banana Flower

  • Banana Flower peeling, cleaning and cutting is a time consuming process and fingers tend to darken. But its always worth it comparing the health benefits it brings to our body.
    First start by removing the red petals one by one. Inside each petal you can find bunch of creamy florets (which later mature to banana when left on tree)
  • Continue peeling the red petal and gather all the florets.
  • Stop peeling once you reach the middle creamy white part.
  • Now its time to clean the forets. Take a floret and peel the outermost petal that surround the floret
  • Remove the pistil which has a long stem and knob on its top.
  • So now the outermost petal, pistil is removed. Discard them. Use only the remaining bunch of floret.
  • Do it for the remaining florets. Transfer the cleaned ones to a bowl.
  • Now for the middle creamy white part. Using knife make some criss cross cuts on the top
  • Chop it finely. Continue for the rest of it.
  • Chop the cleaned florets roughly. Smear some coconut oil to the chopped banana flower to avoid darkening.

How to make Banana Flower Tamarind Curry

  • Soak tamarind in hot water for about 15min.
  • In a pan add oil, when heated up splutter mustard, fenugreek and curry leaves. Add sliced small onion, garlic and saute for 2-3 min.
  • Add banana flower and saute for nearly 10 min.
  • When its ¾ th done, add salt, turmeric powder, 1½ tbsp all purpose chilli powder and saute for 3-4 min.
  • Add tamarind water/concentrate and 2 cups water.
  • Let it boil.
  • Cover and cook in low flame till its fully done for about 10-15 min
  • A good combo with rice. Serve hot.
