Banana Flower Vada
Almost every part of the banana tree can be consumed in some way or other and has innumerable health benefits.Banana Flower is used in traditional Ayurveda since times immemorial due to its ample health quotient. It is rich in Iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, Vit A,C,E, fiber etc. Since it is rich in Iron, it helps in treating anaemia. Rich in magnesium to reduce anxiety and hence serve as anti-depressants. Controls diabetes, prevents constipation, relieves stress and so on. Banana Flower is very healthy to everyone, especially women, as it keeps the uterus healthy, reduces menstrual pain and disorders and helps improve lactation for lactating mothers. It has anti-bacterial, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.Banana Plant can be easily grown in your backyard. Try to cultivate it and consume its fruits and vegetables on a regular basis. It in-turn keeps your body healthy and happy, free from all diseases.Banana flower vada is a traditional recipe commonly prepared in household as evening snacks. It is a good form to introduce banana flower to kids who sometimes are fussy with that ingredient. Banana Flower is a very very healthy ingredient, so try to incorporate in your dish in some way or the other.
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Chana Dal
- 1 Banana Flower
- 1 tsp Fennel Seeds
- 2 Green Chilli
- 2-3 Garlic
- 1 " Ginger
- 1 Onion
- Curry leaves
- Coriander leaves
- ¼ tsp Hing powder (Asafoetida)
- ¼ tsp Turmeric powder
- Salt
Instructions
- Wash and soak chana dal for 2 hours. After 2 hrs, drain the water and place in a colander/ strainer for few minutes to drain away all the remaining water.
- Clean banana flower and keep it ready. (Follow the instructions on this page on how to clean banana flower)
- In a pan add oil and saute banana flower for a few minutes in medium flame till it changes colour.(This step is optional. You can even use fresh cleaned banana flower for this recipe. If you need to store banana flower for few more days than usual, then follow this step and store in refrigerator. Use the stored one to prepare vada when needed.)
- Grind 1 tsp fennel seeds, 2 garlic, 1"ginger, 2 green chilli in a mixie.
- To it add chana dal, banana flower, curry leaves, coriander leaves, salt, hing and turmeric powder.
- Grind it coarsely without adding any water. 2- 3 long pulse will do.
- Add 1 chopped onion, curry leaves.
- Mix it and vada batter is ready.
- Take a small lemon sized dough and roll into ball shape.
- Press it in between your palms and slightly flatten it.
- Prepare the balls and heat oil.
- When oil is hot enough, drop flattened doughs in it.
- Cook it in a medium flame to ensure the middle cavity is cooked too. Flip it over and allow it to cook the other side
- When its cooked, transfer it to a plate.
- Yummy vada is ready. Enjoy as tea time snack..
